Counting Slates, 2023
project developed for
Museu e Arquivo Histórico de Valongo

The idea for this project came from a museum exhibition
called “Earth to Earth”; an exhibition relating the historical use of black slate with the production of tombstones for cemeteries in Portugal in the 19th century, as opposed to today’s use of marble or black granite.

It was possible to present this conclusion from the reading of the legislature of the time: business transactions in the manuscript that are present in the Archives of Infante do Porto. It is these transactions that are reproduced with white paint on the slate plates.

The books displayed on the slate plaques are photomechanical reproductions of the books consulted by museologist Paula Machado in the preparation for Earth to Earth. This is an attempt to make visible to the public, the objects researchers interact with to do their research and communicate their findings.
