“The Birds Printed on the Walls”(alternatively, “If Walls Could Print” or “Farewell, Prints on the Walls”) is a project developed with my mother, Alice, reflecting on my late grandmother, who passed away in 2022 at the age of 100.
______
After reconstructing from memory the pattern once printed on my grandmother’s house, I translated it into a digital trace so that my mother could knit it in filet crochet, which she rendered as a large-scale piece.
I later organised a visit with her to Bairro de S. Roque da Lameira, in Porto, where my mother spent her childhood.
In front of her former bedroom window, she hung the crochet; the scene was photographed and later transferred onto an aluminium plate.
